After high school students began chanting “USA” during sporting events, parents received a warning letter

The chant, often used to show patriotic pride, was said by some to be misused in other schools to target ethnic groups negatively.

Students, like senior Ryan Bernal, expressed confusion, questioning why expressing pride in the U.S. was problematic. School officials, including Principal Michael Garrison, emphasized that the chant could send unintended messages in certain contexts but was acceptable in situations like after the national anthem.

District officials clarified there was no outright ban, but the chant should be used thoughtfully. The issue sparked debate, with some expressing disappointment over the decision, while others defended students’ right to show patriotism freely.
